Mary N.

Mary is funny and full of personality. When Mary is in the room, you know it; she is infectious. Mary is in nursery school and attends the Pockets of after-school Promise Program. She is making excellent progress in her studies and her journey to literacy. Mary lives in the Western Region in Ghana in a coastal community with her mom, dad, and six siblings. Her dad is a fisherman, and her mom prepares and sells the catch of the day. Despite the daily struggles of proper nutrition and economics, Mary is determined to make the most of what Pockets of Promise can offer to her.

Joseph K.

Joseph is in kindergarten two and regularly attends the Pockets of Promise after-school program. He has been attentive to his studies focusing on letters and sounds daily. His family consists of his mother, father, and five siblings in the coastal community of Ghana’s Western Region. Like many other families and neighbors, the primary source of income for the family comes from whatever the sea provides that particular day. Nutrition is one of the most common problems within the coastal community. Daily meals for the children often consist of one portion of the food pyramid, primarily carbohydrates.

Erica Baidoo

Erica’s family dynamic consists of her mother, father, and five siblings in a coastal community in Ghana’s Western Region. Her father is a fisherman, and her mother prepares the day’s catch and trades it at the market. At five years old and bursting with energy, Erica enjoys learning and attending the Pockets of Promise After-School Program, as she cannot participate in preschool. Over the past few years, the fishing communities in Ghana have seen a vast decline in the number of fish caught, making it difficult to provide for the family’s needs.

Philip

Philip lives with his parents and siblings in a village in Uganda. His parents are both farmers but they can no longer farm due to long periods of drought in the area. Life is unbearable for this family. They live in a crumbling hut and have no food or clothing. They have to walk long distances in search of fruits and vegetables to eat. Philip hopes to be a teacher when he grows up. He is currently not in school due to financial hardship. He enjoys playing soccer.

Miria

Miria lives with her parents in a remote village in Uganda. Her mother has diabetes and is very sick. Most of her father’s earnings is spent on her mother’s medical bills. Even though she is in school, she often has to stay home to care for her mother. Life is unbearable for this family and they need help with tuition, clothing and medical expenses. Miria enjoys caring for the sick and hopes to be a nurse in future. She is in second grade, where her performance is average. She enjoys watching movies.

Mesach lives with his parents in a remote village in Uganda. His parents are very sick and do not work. Life is very difficult for this family. They have no money for food, clothing and school. Even though Mesach is in school, he is often sent home for not paying his tuition. He hopes to be an engineer in future. He is in second grade, where his performance is average. He enjoys playing soccer and watching movies.

Life is very difficult for them and they rely on the generosity of their neighbors for food and other necessities. He is currently not in school due to financial hardship. He enjoys playing soccer.
